Baby Book Bags
The Friends of Armidale Library provide the sole funding support for this highly regarded early literacy baby book program.
The program was originally a project of the State Library and is based on a large body of scientific research which links the language and literacy development of children with early parental interactions.
The family of every baby born in Armidale Hospital is provided with a pack containing 2 board books, a CD of nursery rhymes and helpful language and literacy building ideas for parent' information.
The Child and Family Health Nurses, who visit every family of a newborn baby within two weeks of the birth, take the pack on their first visit. It provides them with a talking point and a chance to discuss early communication and shared reading with the family.
Originally the Council and State Library supported the program, but FOAL are now its sole funders.
It costs $5000 p.a. and since 2012 has cost a total of $30,954 in all.
